What's the Story?

THE CHORAL is set during World War I, when a choral society in a small industrial town in Northern England struggles to find singers, given the fact so many young men have been enlisted. The committee brings in Dr. Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), a divisive figure given his ties to Germany but a talented, dedicated choirmaster nonetheless. He has one ambition: to bring music to the people, because never has it seemed more important to sing.

This British historical drama works well for a pleasant Sunday afternoon viewing, but it's hard to shake the feeling it could have been something more substantial. The Choral is written by acclaimed playwright Alan Bennett and directed by Nicholas Hytner, a partnership with proven chemistry from previous collaborations including The History Boys and The Lady in the Van. Death and loss permeate every corner of the film, grounding it in wartime reality. But Bennett's writing maintains a light touch, finding comedy in the darkest places—particularly through witty one-liners from Roger Allam's character. Fiennes delivers another compelling performance to add to his recent run of eclectic, impressive roles. However, the film ends disappointingly flat. Everything builds toward a powerful finale, but when it arrives, the resolution feels muted and anticlimactic.
