The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (2025)
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE, Polly (Maika Monroe) gets a plum nannying job with the Morales family—Claire (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Miguel (Raul Castillo), and their two daughters, Emma (Mileiah Vega) and baby Josie (Lola Contreras). But all is not as it seems, as Claire quicky detects. Polly might not be who she says she is. Claire sees her behaving in suspicious ways. Miguel doesn't believe Claire, leaving her to try to find the truth on her own—or admit she might be having a mental breakdown.
Is It Any Good?
This remake of a classic '90s-era horror film offers a well-paced and fittingly tense showcase for its directing and acting talents. From its earliest scenes, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle foreshadows calamities to come, setting viewers up to edgily guess at which plot and character clues will ultimately be important. It can feel confusing and predictable at the same time, as some clues pay off and others fade away, subtly evoking the disoriented mental state of the main character.
Eerie music punctuated by faint heartbeats and whispered words helps craft a mood of foreboding, while director Garza Cervera and cinematographer Jo Willems play with angles, mirroring, and overlays (as well as a nod to a Vertigo-style hair twist) to artfully suggest one character's efforts to gaslight and eventually take the place of her rival. With all of this effort toward building suspense with nuance, the gore of the third act can feel gratuitous. You can find elements to pick apart, but this remake is ultimately creative, well-acted, and suspenseful.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the violence in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Some of the fear is unresolved, other scenes are quite bloody. Are the violent scenes scarier than the sequences that just threaten violence, or vice versa? Do the graphic scenes ever go too far, in your opinion? Explain.
What parts of this story most surprised you? Were there things you expected to happen that didn't? Explain.
What's the point of remaking a movie? What other remakes have you seen? If you've seen the original of this one, how do the two compare?
