The Last First: Winter K2
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
After the COVID lockdown, alpinists like Icelander John Snorri were itching to get back out on the mountains, as described in THE LAST FIRST: WINTER K2. Snorri contracted Pakistani mountaineers Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid to accompany him up the Himalayan peak known as K2 to attempt to become the first ever to summit the mountain in winter. But after a few weeks of camping, acclimating, and preparing their climb, suddenly dozens more climbers showed up. That included famous Nepalese climber Nirmal Purja, whose team wanted the win for their country, as well as a group of less experienced climbers traveling with a trekking company, and others. The crowds and the weather complicated the situation.
Is It Any Good?
There's plenty of drama in this trek-gone-wrong documentary, which details a summiting expedition that got 10 to the top but left five dead. Viewers with an interest in or connection to the extreme climbing community will especially appreciate the first-hand testimonies and footage of The Last First: Winter K2. Other viewers will also find a lot of interest in this tense account of the deadly two-month undertaking, which includes significant finger-pointing within the community about who might be to blame. The locations are also stunning, of course.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how commercialization and influencer culture have impacted the climbing community, as seen in The Last First: Winter K2.
How do climbers show perseverance and teamwork in this film? When some decide to go ahead or turn back, are they undermining either of these qualities? How so?
What clues does the documentary give as to who perished on the mountain? Does knowing the history add or detract from the viewing experience, in your opinion?
How would you describe the various accusations in the film? Where could you find out more information about these specific people and their claims?
