The Last Sunrise
What's the Story?
In THE LAST SUNRISE, Isolde (Eva Longoria) and daughter Oriah (Maia Reficco) are spending time in Mallorca, Spain for the summer. Isolde, who is originally from Mallorca, is opening a new luxury hotel on the island. Ry, as Oriah is called, experiences seizures due to serious tumors. She's resisting surgery, which isn't guaranteed to cure her and could erase her memory, and she starts skipping doses of her life-saving medication. She says she just wants to feel things again, and she gets the chance in Mallorca when she meets hunk Julian (Fernando Lindez). But her illness and, surprisingly, her mother's business and personal connection to Julian's dad (Andres Valencoso), may make things difficult.
Is It Any Good?
The real star of this film is its stunning setting (Mallorca), but the actors are appealing too, and the story will surely please its target audience. The Last Sunrise is one more tale of a young person with a potentially fatal illness wanting to enjoy life and fall in love. It's interesting how many films follow this same basic storyline—as if the teens and 20s weren't already filled with high emotion. But Longoria, Reficco, and Lindez make a strong trio and keep the story sincere. Despite some script inconsistencies, like why a character who grew up in Mallorca speaks little to no Spanish, the film tries to understand the local point of view (anti-tourist, enjoy life attitudes). And Mallorca simply glimmers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why so many films turn on young characters with serious illness, as in The Last Sunrise? Of the ones you've seen, which is your favorite and why?
In what ways does Julian express disdain for tourism in Mallorca? Do you think this is based on real life? Why or why not, and where could you go for more information?
How do you define "success," a topic of conversation between Julian and Ry?
