What's the Story?
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD is the name of a Bachelor-style Indonesian game show, created by media mogul Gunadi Wiraatmadja (Bucek Depp). Gunadi's son, handsome playboy Reuben (Reza Rahadian), is primed to take over for his dad, but that day comes a lot sooner than expected when his father passes away. In his dad's will is a stipulation that Reuben is eligible for his inheritance only if he marries "the most beautiful girl in the world" within six months. Reuben sets himself up as the next bachelor on the show, but he brings in no-nonsense producer Kiara (Sheila Dara Aisha) to reshape the program as an unscripted reality show set up for him to find true love. He may find it, but not where he was looking.
Is It Any Good?
Despite a rocky first act and elongated run time, this Indonesian romantic comedy features two charming actors in a story that turns enjoyably quirky about halfway in. That's when the stars of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World find themselves (spoiler alert!) stranded on a tropical island, one of thousands in Indonesia, giving them time to get to know each other outside of their daily structures. It turns out she's the boss, and the more self-assured of the two. He, in turn, is a little inept without his staff to assist. Aisha and Rahadian play this character reveal with charm, sincerity, and vulnerability.
