A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure is a comedic swashbuckler from South Korea, set in the 1300s, in Korean with subtitles or dubbing available. It's also a standalone sequel to the 2014 movie The Pirates. Violence includes sword fights, martial arts fights, and battles on land and sea. Blood is briefly shown spraying, spurting, and pooling and there are bloody injuries and gory sound effects. A decapitated head is briefly seen. Characters face danger from drowning, fire, and lightning, and there's lots of slapstick. There's one kiss and some brief sexual innuendo. Strong language includes "bulls--t," "damn," and "son of a bitch." Someone mentions that a character should stop drinking so much, and someone says that another needs to lose weight. Female pirate captain Hae-Rang is a good model for courage, perseverance, and leadership.

What's the Story?
THE PIRATES: THE LAST ROYAL TREASURE follows a gang of bandits led by Woo Moo-Chi (Kang Ha-neul) as they take to the sea to escape pursuit. Shipwrecked and barely clinging to life while floating on the wreckage, they're rescued by a pirate ship led by Captain Hae-Rang (Han Hyo-joo). The two gangs form an uneasy alliance in search of long-lost treasure. But can they learn to work together to get the gold?
Is It Any Good?
Viewers who like Pirates of the Caribbean will enjoy this Korean swashbuckler. The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure has plenty of slapstick comedy and smart-aleck dialogue to add a breezy feel to the epic, fast-paced story with big special effects, well-choreographed fights, exciting battles, and a charismatic cast. Lots of favorite pirate movie tropes are here -- giant whales, adorable penguins, coded maps -- plus a K-pop star!
Abrupt flashbacks and jumps to subplots are sometimes confusing, but adventure and pirate fans can easily let this go and just enjoy the ride. Bloody violence and strong language make it best for teens and up.
