What's the Story?

THE THREE MUSKETEERS - PART II: MILADY picks up with a recap of the most important events from the first film, so newcomers can follow along (though it may be harder to connect with the characters). As the new story begins, the king (Louis Garrel) and his court are trying to identify who's behind an assassin's attempt on the king's life. As the divide between Catholic loyalists and Protestant rebels deepens, civil war seems imminent, and the musketeers discover enemies among friends—and allies among the opposition.

Through the direction of Martin Bourboulon, Dumas' classic tale is told with more complexity than ever before. In The Three Musketeers - Part II: Milady, the political intrigue is deeper, the "who to trust" element is felt, and the action sequences are breathtaking. Just like in the first film, Bourboulon has created a camera technique that makes viewers feel like they're in the thick of things without resorting to anything distractingly hokey or a video game-style point of view.

He also doesn't back off of the brutality in these moments, including innocents being hanged and a dagger being plunged over and over into an attack dog. While saving viewers from excessive bloody or gory moments, these shocking moments of violence breathe authenticity into the cinematic experience—but they may also be too much for younger or sensitive teens.
