What's the Story?

In THE THREESOME, a fun night of partying and dancing for Connor (Jonah Hauer-King), Olivia (Zoey Deutch), and Jenny (Ruby Cruz) continues in the bedroom. But what's intended to be one wild night turns into an unexpected debacle that will have lifelong consequences.

Our review:
Parents say : Not yet rated
Kids say ( 1 ):

The movie's risqué title delivers on its promise, but this randy romp doubles as a refreshingly thoughtful lesson about responsibility. While romcoms often cater to women, The Threesome seems aimed more at men, with an appealing male lead (Hauer-King) who's awkwardly trying to figure out how to win the woman he's adored for years. When a stereotypical male fantasy presents itself as a shortcut to this romantic goal, he jumps at it. But his impulsive decision to enjoy one night of pleasure unravels into a real emotional fallout, and he ends up twisting over what's the right thing to do and whose feelings matter most.

While The Threesome flirts with "Madonna-whore" clichés when it comes to depictions of female characters, it redeems itself by showing that people are more than their mistakes. Parents may be surprised that a movie with such a provocative premise offers more than laughs—indeed, it leaves a lasting message that doubles down on the parental mantra of "Make good choices!"

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how The Threesome conveys the idea that indulging in risky behavior—even for just one night—can have unintended consequences. What are those consequences here?

  • How do Connor, Olivia, and Jenny each handle their surprising development? Who behaves with humility and integrity? Who acts with consideration, and who acts selfishly? When life takes you in a different direction from what you planned, how is that an opportunity to grow—and how do you see each of the main characters do that?

  • Are drinking or smoking pot glamorized here? Are there realistic consequences? Why does that matter?
