The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In 2022, 25-year-old competitive cyclist Moriah Wilson was found shot to death at a friend's house in Austin, as told in THE TRUTH AND TRAGEDY OF MORIAH WILSON. Moriah's family and friends describe Moriah and tell her story; this is complemented by words from her diary and footage and pictures of her short but full life. The film details the case, revealing how investigators came to their conclusions and how the murder was carried out. We witness the trial of the person eventually convicted of Moriah's murder.
Is It Any Good?
This is an emotional re-creation of the loss of and investigation into the murder of a beloved young woman with a promising cycling career. As a documentary, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson is well constructed and will hold viewers' attention. It seems clear that Wilson's family sat for interviews to honor her memory, as they've done with the creation of a foundation in her name, and potentially to help prevent other crimes of passion from occurring.
But there's something uncomfortably voyeuristic about the true crime genre in general, as we peer into the lives of the dead and grieving and try to guess at the motivations of murderers. You can't help but wonder while watching what the popularity of the genre says about us.
