What's the Story?

THIS IS I is based on the true story of a Japanese teen who believed he was born into the wrong body and eventually wins a prestigious international pageant. Teenaged Kenji (Haruki Mochizuki) Is bullied at school and leaves his family as they struggle to accept his difference. He's renamed "Ai" when he leaves his family and is adopted by a group of trans women night club performers. Ai is a gifted lip-syncher and a pretty good dancer. She looks great in lipstick, sequins, and satin and works hard to fulfill her dream is to become "an idol." Dr. Wada (Takumi Saito), a local plastic surgeon who performs cosmetic tweaks on many of the trans performers at the night club, recognizes the way Ai "shines" when she performs. Can Wada help Ai feel comfortable in her skin so she can fulfill her dream?

This is I is a sweet film about a seemingly sweet person whose strength of character sees her through a challenging situation. Haruki Mochizuki gives a lively, committed performance as Ai struggles to live life authentically. Takumi Saito as Dr Wada is equally good as the depressive, dedicated physician. What feels a bit strange and even disappointing is Ai's seeming notion that only success in the entertainment business and the adulation of crowds can lead her to a fulfilled life.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about Ai's parents' reactions to her transition. Did it surprise you? Why or why not?

  • Classmates make fun of Ai, who as a young boy was named Kenji. Why do you think the world mocks people who are different?

  • Ai's dream is to become an "idol." How is that different from wanting to become a great singer or dancer? What does the word "idol" signify? Fame? Acceptance? Adoration?
