Through My Window: Looking at You
What's the Story?
Ares (Julio Peña) is home for the holidays, though he and Raquel (Clara Galle) are not together, at the start of THROUGH MY WINDOW: LOOKING AT YOU. Ares is dating Vera (Andrea Chaparro) and Raquel is with Gregory (Ivan Lapadula), though the two have not stopped loving each other and both look for the other through their windows. Gregory sees that Raquel is working on a second novel, again about Ares, and he breaks up with her. Ares and Vera know they're not in love, but their families are in business together and have a reason to want the relationship to work out. Meanwhile, Anna (Clara Tous) hasn't gotten over the death of her love interest and doesn't accept Raquel's relationship with Ares, and other friends and family members have their own romantic dilemmas to solve.
Is It Any Good?
This third entry in a Wattpad-based trilogy improves on part two with more character depth and greater attention to detail in its setting. While part of the series' appeal is its universal story of young relationships, Through My Window: Looking at You offers a few more cultural details (beyond just the beauty) of its Catalan setting than previous films. Likewise, characters are slightly less two-dimensional: The Hidalgo brothers' relationship with their father and Raquel's with her mother are subtly explored, for example. The film also seems to make a nod to its Latin American and Latino audience with the addition of more regional characters.
You still don't believe Raquel is an accomplished writer, nor does it feel realistic that a character faces zero consequences for slipping potentially fatal drugs into a friend's drink. But fans don't come for realism. They come for the magic of the tortured romance, à la Twilight or After. They come for the film's beautiful young stars, who are now recognizable in other Netflix products (see Peña in Money Heist spinoff Berlín, for example). An epilogue suggests the love story ends here. Stick around for the whimsical end credits.
