What's the Story?

Based on a true story, TRIUMPH OF THE HEART tells the story of the act of sacrifice that led Catholic priest Maximilian Kolbe (Marcin Kwasny) to martyrdom—and, ultimately, sainthood. After Kolbe volunteers to die in place of another prisoner at the Nazis' Auschwitz death camp during World War II, the film follows him and his fellow inmates as they spend 14 days in a starvation cell, forging a brotherhood through a message of hope during one of history's darkest moments.

It's a bit too long, but this drama is still a touching tribute to the life, sacrifice, and martyrdom of Maximilian Kolbe. Kwasny's performance effectively conveys the power of Kolbe's extraordinary faith during one of the most tumultuous times in history, as well as his inspiring resilience and steadfastness. Although documenting 14 days of men existing in a starvation cell isn't inherently gripping, the filmmakers behind Triumph of the Heart intersperse it with war scenes to make sure the story doesn't lag too much. The script is also a little dry and stiff. But Kolbe certainly had a lasting impact on history, and if you have the patience to stick with it, this is ultimately a worthy faith-based drama.
