Tyler Perry's Duplicity
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
When TV news anchor Fela's (Meagan Tandy) husband, Rodney (Joshua Adeyeye), is shot and killed by a police officer, her best friend Marley (Kat Graham) vows to seek justice and ensure Fela a multimillion-dollar settlement in TYLER PERRY'S DUPLICITY. Marley's boyfriend, ex-cop Tony (Tyler Lepley), and Fela's colleagues from the TV station, Sam (Nick Barrotta) and Shannon (played by real-life TV host Shannon LaNier), get involved in Marley's investigations. A White police officer (Jimi Stanton) is accused of the shooting, which happened on officer Kevin's (RonReaco Lee) watch, but it seems nothing is as it appears.
Is It Any Good?
Tyler Perry films seem to come with a built-in audience, no matter how goofy the humor or, as in this case, over-the-top the melodrama. Tyler Perry's Duplicity capitalizes on current events to craft a story of betrayal and murder. The largely Black cast members are styled as attractive but exaggerated archetypes (the dogged lawyer, the bad cop, the likable news anchor, the investigative reporter, and so on), and their performances are overstated too. Graham in particular often speaks with unnecessary pauses, in a way that's distracting. So long as you're not looking for much subtlety, the film has entertainment value.
