What's the Story?

Xavier (Juan Pablo Fuentes) is a troubled teen who collaborates with his buddy-slash-love interest Gerardo (Fernando Cattori) to rob his own family home in UNTAMED ROYALS. The heist goes according to plan and inspires others, but investigators show up and start digging, led by Rodrigo (Alfonso Herrera) and sent by Xavier's powerful grandfather. Other family members get involved. What gets uncovered and who gets blamed don't always match up.

Despite shades of Parasite, this Mexican drama loses its narrative integrity while trying too hard to surprise with its visual imagery and to shock with its characters' actions. Untamed Royals is reminiscent of the South Korean phenomenon in the way some shots are composed and framed, as well as in the look of the main character's concrete and glass home. Instead of class warfare or servants taking revenge, you have the wealthy extorting and stealing from the wealthy, while the servant class pays. What's missing are characters you can connect with, understand a little better, or believe have any kind of interior life. There's talent on display in this film behind and in front of the camera, but ultimately there's just not enough story to prop it all up.

  • What are the consequences of the teenagers' actions? Do they seem bothered by negative outcomes? Why, or why not?

  • There's mention of a powerful grandfather figure. What is the connection to the police? Why do they consistently blame the servants? How realistic is this scenario, do you think?

  • How would you describe the look of this film? How does the lighting match the storyline? Can you point to any particularly memorable scenes or shots?
