What's the Story?

UNTOLD follows journalist Vivian Vera (Jodi Sta. Maria), whose past reporting on the "Cement Massacre" resurfaces when the victims' spirits begin to haunt her. As supernatural events unfold, people connected to her work suffer terrifying fates. Forced to face the consequences of her sensationalism, Vivian must decide whether to protect her career or confront the truth that the ghosts demand.

This Filipino horror film bites off more than it can chew in its themes, but some of the jump scares are reminiscent of Sam Raimi's underrated Drag Me to Hell. Untold follows journalist Vivian, played by Jodi Sta. Maria, who is haunted by the ghosts of a story she failed to do justice. Sta. Maria brings layers of fear and nuance to her role, hinting at a stronger movie than what unfolds. The ghosts are unsettling even when unexplained, and the story flirts with social commentary and contemporary issues, but genre tropes ultimately take over.

The supporting cast is serviceable but forgettable, and the supernatural effects do their job without standing out. Some of the gory scenes linger too long, making it clear the film prioritizes thrills over storytelling. In the end, Untold is fun but shallow, best suited for horror fans and older teens.
