What's the Story?
From club bouncer to #1 TV show, UNTOLD MR. T: I PITY THE FOOL reveals the full rags-to-riches story behind the 1980s pop culture icon and real-life superhero otherwise known as Laurence Tureaud (spelled Tero throughout the documentary).
Is It Any Good?
This is an underdog story of an unforgettable personality who isn't afraid to truly be himself. A cynic might think that the mohawk, excessive gold chains, wild clothing choices, gruff voice mannerisms, and unique catchphrases were just a calculated attempt to stand out. But through this short but riveting story, the audience learns why Mr. T isn't just a gimmick or a put-on persona, but a thoughtful, articulate Black man with a purpose.
While the film focuses on the subject's rags-to-riches story, it doesn't shy away from showing the struggles behind Laurence Tero's rise to fame. Framing it as a scandalous sports documentary, though, seems like a stretch. However, this reflective film leaves a lasting impression with its messages of using power for good, making dreams possible, and demanding the respect you deserve.
