Untold UK: Liverpool's Miracle of Istanbul
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
UNTOLD UK: LIVERPOOL'S MIRACLE OF ISTANBUL reunites the 2005 team and manager behind Liverpool's historic Champions League victory to tell their story.
Is It Any Good?
A legendary sporting comeback, Liverpool's triumph in the 2005 Champions League final is arguably the most famous major final in European soccer. Netflix labeling Untold UK: Liverpool's Miracle of Istanbul as an "untold" story underplays how many documentaries exist about this fabled night already, but this version does a decent job allowing the main characters space to retell its story. While there's not much in the way of new information, there are some interesting insights. Liverpool's winning manager, Rafa Benitez, is portrayed as an obsessive tactician who, while emotionally distant, pushed his players to achieve something remarkable. Former Liverpool captain and star player Steven Gerrard is candid about both Benitez's impact and almost joining one of Liverpool's arch rivals the season before, owing to his doubts about the club's direction. The inclusion of Michael Owen feels like padding, though, as the former England striker has never been forgiven by some Liverpool fans for signing for Real Madrid a year before their triumph. Thankfully the footage of the final remains a dizzying thrill ride even when you know the result, so it all builds to a climax that never fails to disappoint. Unless you're an AC Milan fan, obviously.
