Untold UK: Vinnie Jones
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
UNTOLD UK: VINNIE JONES tells the story of the former soccer player's ascent from sportsman to movie star.
Is It Any Good?
In this brief overview of Jones' soccer career, the focus is inevitably on his role in Wimbledon's unlikely 1988 FA Cup win over Liverpool, the heavy favorites and most successful club at the time. His second act as a movie star, kickstarted by a memorable part in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, is presented more as a footnote in Untold UK: Vinnie Jones, but offers some redemption after his sporting career descended into caricature on and off the field. Jones is quick to acknowledge and articulate the role that the U.K.'s relentless tabloid media played in casting him as a cartoon villain, while admitting that his soccer career started failing because there became less room in the game for his tendency to bend and break the rules as the standard of players around him steadily improved. A more in-depth documentary might probe deeper into how the media's intrusion into Jones' life affected him and how much he was complicit. Interviewees such as journalist Piers Morgan claiming to be Jones' friend while talking about him in transactional terms arguably tells its own story, as well as a final note that Jones has been sober since 2013.
