Vini Jr.
What's the Story?
VINI JR. chronicles the journey of Brazilian soccer player Vinícius Júnior from his youth in São Gonçalo to global recognition at Real Madrid. It documents his early years in Flamengo, his historic transfer to Real Madrid, and his crucial contributions toward winning titles like the Champions League. It also details the racism he has endured during his career, along with his increasing prominence as an advocate for change within the sport. With numerous interviews from family and players such as Neymar, Ronaldo, and Benzema, this documentary paints a vivid portrait of a world-renowned athlete and youth advocate.
Is It Any Good?
If you're already a fan of Vinícius Júnior, this Netflix documentary will be an interesting watch, but it doesn't say anything new. Most of the story in Vini Jr., including his highlight reels, big wins, and rise from São Gonçalo to Real Madrid, could be easily pieced together from a Google search or a YouTube compilation. The film presents a polished feel and has the intention to celebrate Vinícius Júnior's skill and grit; however, it aims no further than superficial adoration.
Where the documentary stands out is in its direct approach to issues of racism in soccer. The power of Vinícius Júnior's honesty, frustration, and developing advocacy work constantly speak to the audience. The film's most compelling part is when it focuses on not just his great talent, but also his courage in taking a stand and not staying silent, despite the toll this might have on his career. Those moments of activism deliver impactful sentiments, even though the documentary was likely made for fans rather than casual viewers.
