What's the Story?
In WIDOW CLICQUOT, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot (Haley Bennett) unexpectedly inherits her late husband François' (Tom Sturridge) winery after his untimely death. Missing him desperately, Barbe-Nicole refuses to sell the vineyards, despite potentially facing financial insolvency. All the men—except one, longtime friend Louis Bohne (Sam Reilly)—doubt her and work to take the vines away from her. But, relying on her instincts and the knowledge of winemaking that she cultivated under François' tutelage, she develops lasting innovations to the Champagne industry (which are still used today). Demonstrating a bold business savvy, she manages Veuve Clicuqot in a uniquely feminine and humble way, establishing it as one of the premier Champagne brands of all time. The movie was adapted from the nonfiction book The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It.
Is It Any Good?
Steeped in sadness, this somber biopic about the Grand Dame of Champagne is anything but bubbly. The Veuve Clicquot brand origin story is a meditation on grief, starting with the opening shot of Barbe-Nicole dressing and attending François' funeral. She moves forward from there with determination, with flashbacks showing the intense romance between her and her beloved. But the vibe is consistently grim. The couple's passion is palatable, their love aspirational. But those glimpses are limited and ultimately become more and more tragic.
We've seen movies about the evolution of big brands before, but what many of them are missing is a woman who takes charge and is given credit for her success. Barbe-Nicole's story is full of positive life lessons, but, much like a fine wine, her evolution into a powerful businesswoman and one of France's wealthiest citizens takes time and patience. The real-life Grand Dame of Champagne is a role model for the ages, but to drink in her story and appreciate it, the film is better for those closer to the legal drinking age.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about whether Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot is a role model. How is her eventual success reliant on her humility, perseverance, courage, curiosity, and self-control? How does her life story, as depicted here, highlight why these are important traits?
What was life like for women in the late 1700s and early 1800s? How does Barbe-Nicole succeed by operating within the system? Do you think women and men perceive leadership and power differently? Why do you think the older characters thought it was so odd for François and Barbe-Nicole to be in the fields, working in the vineyard with their employees?
Talk about suicide and the way it's addressed here. When is it important to talk about mental health, especially if you're worried about a friend or family member? What resources are available to help both kids and adults?
What was the Napoleonic Code, and why was it adopted? How did it impact women? What can we do today to ensure that government laws and policies are fair to everyone?
This film is about the wine- and Champagne-making industry. Is drinking glamorized? What about drug use? Are there realistic consequences? Why does that matter?
