Will & Harper
What's the Story?
In WILL & HARPER, Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele take a road trip across America. The two have been friends for 30 years, stemming from when Will was a young comedian and Harper, formerly going by "Andrew," was a writer on Saturday Night Live. Will describes receiving a letter from Harper explaining that she had transitioned as a woman and hoped their friendship could continue. The two decide to take a road trip to spend time together, and to allow Will to learn about Harper's transition. When presenting as a man, Harper liked to drive across the country and spend time in rural areas, at dive bars and sporting venues. They want to see if she can still do these trips as a trans woman. We see her first encounters as a woman with old friends and colleagues, conversations with loving family members, and both supportive and hateful treatment by strangers during their road trip.
Is It Any Good?
If the presence of Ferrell draws audiences into this gentle, meaningful, and funny meditation on gender identity and friendship, then all the better. Will & Harper is a tender and entertaining film, lovingly conceived with the best of intentions, and edited together for maximum emotional effect. Ferrell may be the reason the film got made, and the driving force behind its promotion and pull, but despite his celebrity he's there as a kind of "everyman" ("Ricky Bobby!" a bystander shouts) and witness. We watch him slowly let down his comedic guard and realize the seriousness of his friend's experience, shedding tears over her pain, grasping both the beauty and the dangers she now faces as a trans woman, and comprehending his own responsibility as her straight, famous friend. The story is about Harper's journey, but the film represents a voyage for them both.
This is how hearts and minds get changed. The pair have both shown significant courage and vulnerability in opening up on screen to share this experience. The film captures their conversations, set up before they're even together in person when two separate interviews are spliced together as if in dialogue. It's one example of the clever editing and use of transitions that keep the road movie visually and aurally interesting. Other examples are the overlapping of maps tracking their movements, the counting of days, the interweaving of humor and drama, and the fantastic assignment of poignant, fitting tunes for each stage of their journey, from Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe," to a version of Simon & Garfunkel's "America," Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm," to The Band's "The Weight," and finally buddy Kristen Wiig's excellent "Will & Harper" theme song during closing credits.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what they found most interesting about Will & Harper. Did you learn anything new about being trans or having gender dysphoria? What did Harper mean when she said, "A lot of transitioning is learning to accept yourself"?
Harper repeats the idea that traveling with Will, a celebrity, gives her a "pass," and that the experience traveling across the country as a trans woman would be very different without him along. What do you think she means? How would traveling with or without a celebrity be different?
Do you think it took courage for Harper to make this movie? How about for Will? Was it brave of them to travel to the places they go together in the film? Did they face the most negative reactions in person or online?
Will cries multiple times in the film. He's surprised by what he learns about Harper as well as the reactions Harper elicits as they travel together. He expresses his own regrets about not knowing what she was experiencing during their long friendship. How does all of this demonstrate compassion? Why is compassion such an important character strength?
This film is a road movie, and the locations as well as the music set a certain tone. What images and songs stand out to you as most memorable from the film?
