What's the Story?

Remi Aguilar (Jenna Ortega) is a stellar student looking to attend an Ivy League school like Harvard in the fall, when WINTER SPRING SUMMER OR FALL begins. She happens to meet the handsome but somewhat aimless Barnes (Percy Hynes White) on a train, and he strikes up a conversation. He's clearly taken with her, but she keeps her distance at first. When they run into each other again at prom, they go on their first date and quickly fall in love. Spending the summer together, Remi begins taking chances and doing things she hasn't done before, and she gets a little reckless.

This film boasts two appealing young stars, but it speeds them through a romance and their own personal arcs (mostly hers) toward a conclusion that is predictable from the start. Winter Spring Summer or Fall has plenty of likable ingredients, including a story of first love for opposite types on the eve of high school graduation. But there's nothing here you haven't seen before, and while the repartee between the young couple includes some cute exchanges, the story feels rushed. You never really get to know the characters or fully believe how quickly Remi changes (and then changes back, and then settles in the middle). Maybe if the film had just been Spring, it could have slowed the story down and created a more authentic journey for Remi.
