What's It About?
THE BLACK HISTORY BUFF PODCAST shares courageous biographies of well-known and lesser-known heroes and innovators of the past and present throughout the African diaspora. The podcast was created when host King Kurus realized a void in platforms that taught children about Black history. The Black History Buff Podcast shares intriguing stories of the first Black samurai Yasuke, boxer Bill Richmond, circus performer Miss Lala, and many more. In addition to biographies, this podcast offers episodes that feature African proverbs and social commentary. The podcast's YouTube channel offers even more insightful historical content and features some Black change-makers of past and present who are not featured on the podcast.
Is It Any Good?
King Kurus brings light to important figures in Black history in a way that's accessible and fascinating for listeners of all ages. The Black History Buff Podcast would be a great supplement to world history and U.S. history lessons taught in schools and offers informative listening for kids and adults alike.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how The Black History Buff explores Black history from a Black perspective. Have you heard of the change-makers or stories featured on this podcast in school? Why do you think not many of these stories are featured in your history books at school?
Why is it important to know who writes the books we read about history? What are some resources you can use to learn more about Black history from different perspectives? How do you know a retelling of history is accurate or not?
Why is it important for people of all races and ethnicities to learn about innovators and heroes from underrepresented communities? Did any of these stories change your view or understanding of history?
The histories told throughout this podcast feature themes of courage and perseverance. Why have these character strengths been particularly important in Black history? How do these character strengths look similar and different in Black history than they may look in the history of other cultures?
