What's the Story?

A prequel to the series 4 Blocks, 4 BLOCKS ZERO tells the story of the Hamady family's entrance to the world of organized crime. When Ibrahim is released from a Lebanese prison and exiled from the country, he reunites with his estranged family in Germany. But paying off his debts from prison means once again immersing himself in a life of crime.

Crime sagas about marginalized communities tend to be pulled in two directions, and this one is no different. 4 Blocks Zero tells a story about a Lebanese family in 1990s Berlin, which is a unique and fascinating subject. Unfortunately, it's beholden to a Godfather-esque story arc that flattens out what should otherwise be nuanced characters into gangster stereotypes. The oppression of this marginalized community feels one-note and heavy-handed within the context of this story, and the pathos gets undercut by the series' need to serve its audience routine violence (albeit with some occasionally great fight choreography).

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about 1990s Berlin. Where does Ibrahim's family live? What is the community like? How are they perceived by native Germans? How does this effect their day-to-day lives?

  • Who are the members of Ibrahim's family? What makes each of them unique? How do their morals and values differ?

  • What role does violence play in this series? How does it affect the lives of the characters? How do their relationships to violence change over the course of the series?
