What's the Story?
A DIFFERENT WORLD returns with a new generation of students at Hillman College. Self-proclaimed party girl Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon) is trying to step out of her parents' shadow and make a new name for herself. This proves extra difficult as the youngest daughter of Hillman luminaries Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne (Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison) from the original series. As she starts her freshman year, she meets the studious overachiever Rashida (Alijah Kai) and the witty and supportive Amir (Jordan Aaron Hall), and she reconnects with her old fling, star quarterback Shaquille (Cornell Young IV). While the new crew launches into young adulthood and the ebbs and flows of HBCU life, familiar alumni navigate parenthood and try to uphold the Hillman legacy.
Is It Any Good?
This reboot is nostalgic yet contemporary, balancing the current social media landscape with the classic backdrop of life at the iconic fictional HBCU. A Different World pays tribute to its beloved characters and references, but the new generation takes the wheel in creating their own narrative. As with many adapted sitcoms, this sequel takes more of a dramedy approach, but it still maintains the light-heartedness of the original series while tackling serious subjects. Though parents will want to mind the language, sexual themes, product placement, and drug references, it's still a good world to visit as a family.
