What's the Story?

A GREAT DAY WITH J BALVIN is a reality series that follows musical artist J Balvin as he travels around the United States and meets celebrities to talk about how they maintain good mental health. In 2019 the Colombian reggaeton singer began using Instagram to talk about his struggles with anxiety and depression in hopes of compelling his followers to begin prioritizing their mental health needs. Now J Balvin is meeting up with folks like Miami Heat player Jimmy Butler, singer Demi Lovato, and rising pub chef Brooklyn Peltz Beckham to share some quality time together, talk about their individual mental health challenges, and showcase the different ways they are finding balance in their lives. Animated scenes are also used to help viewers visualize what people's dark moments may feel like. Throughout it all, Balvin shares some of his personal life experiences and the lessons he's learning throughout this journey.

This earnest series offers honest conversations about the way celebrities from different walks of life have found healthy ways to manage their mental health disorders and find balance. Despite the focus on people who are in the limelight, it's overwhelmingly relatable thanks to J Balvin's openness about his own mental disorders, and the willingness of other cast members to share their very personal struggles and darkest moments, but within the context of what led them to decide to seek medical intervention and to develop the daily practices they rely on to help manage their symptoms. This includes eating well, taking prescribed medications consistently and responsibly, being willing to talk about negative feelings, and finding human connection while enjoying the things they love.

Balvin also addresses some of common belief systems in Latino communities that have historically stigmatized mental illness and getting help, and notes how important it is to change them. All of this is offered as a way of highlighting the fact that anyone, regardless of cultural background, fame, success, or privilege, may face mental health challenges in their lives, and that it is OK to look and ask for help in order to feel better. Granted, A Great Day with J Balvin seems to be focused on the millennial set, but people of any age can benefit from the messages this series offers about prioritizing mental wellness.
