What's the Story?

AGATHA CHRISTIE'S SEVEN DIALS focuses on Lady Eileen Brent, aka "Bundle," who has lost her father and brother to World War I and lives in a huge, dilapidated house with her mother. When Bundle's suitor and friend of her brother's dies mysteriously after a party at her house, she sets out to find out whether or not foul play was involved.

Is It Any Good?

Adapting a fair play murder mystery is no easy task, in large part because many the mechanics rely on taking advantage of a reader's imagination. Agatha Christie's Seven Dials isn't nearly as ambitious as, say, Rian Johnson's Knives Out series in figuring out how to translate those tricks of the trade to the screen. But, like Johnson's works, it displays a deep understanding of the intricate plotting that makes Christie's mysteries pay off. Even the changes made to the original book fit within Christie's modus operandi (unlike, for example, the Kenneth Branagh adaptations, which only seem to be able to make embarrassing additions to their source material).

As Superintendent Battle says at one point, "some things are not what they seem, and other things are exactly what they seem." It's a hint for the audience that doubles as a summation of Christie's and Seven Dials' ability to hide clues in plain sight. There are no secret twins or Rube Goldberg machines here, but there are plenty of twists, reveals, and red herrings to keep both casual viewers and fair play mystery vets engaged.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the mystery. What is the central mystery in Seven Dials? What clues are given? Is this a "fair play" mystery -- for example, one that is solvable with the information given?

  • What are some of the other plot questions that the series raises? How do you think these relate to the central mystery?

  • When does Agatha Christie's Seven Dials take place? Does the series have a point of view about that era? How does the series relate to the history and events of the time? Why do you think the creators chose to adapt this now?
