Akuma Kun
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
AKUMA KUN is a spin-off sequel to the original 1989 Akuma-kun anime. It follows the second Akuma-kun, a genius boy who is the reincarnation of his own father, as he struggles to understand his own destiny of bringing ultimate happiness to both the human and demon worlds. Akuma-kun (voiced by Michael Johnston) and his half-demon companion, Mephisto III, (voiced by Kyle McCarley) spend their time until then solving mysteries and making new friends.
Is It Any Good?
This paranormal mystery drama attracts viewers both old and new to the franchise with a suspenseful but heartfelt sequel series. Despite its nostalgic, cutesy art style, Akuma Kun is a surprisingly dark show with mature themes about the human condition. That said, each mystery tackles big topics in engaging ways -- being thoughtful, but not preachy about how to build a happier world. But viewers should be wary that more sensitive audiences may find the violence and fear factor too upsetting.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about maturing and growing up. What lessons does Akuma-kun learn from each of his cases? How does that influence how he changes as a character?
How does Akuma-kun respond to the pressure he feels to fulfill his destiny? How do his family and friends try to help him respond to this pressure?
Why are diverse representations important in books, movies, games, etc.? What do we gain from seeing ourselves reflected in the media, or by seeing people who are different from us?
