Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
ALEX & CO. is an Italian sitcom featuring high schooler Alex (Leonardo Cecchi) and his friends Emma, Christian, Sam, and Nicole. The series begins on the first day of high school as viewers learn that Alex's friend, Nicole, has realized she has romantic feelings for him. Before the day is over, they'll both make new friends and a tight knit group of five will be formed. As the gang learns what it takes to succeed in high school, they also discover their mutual love for music and decide to form a band.
Is It Any Good?
This series is a Saved By the Bell wannabe that suffers from bland writing, unnatural dialogue and exaggerated acting. In Alex & Co., the characters fall into predictable stereotypes- the bully jock, the mean girl, the nerd and the rebel cool teacher. The plot lines are thin, and the show relies on tired gender roles and uninspired jokes. Troubling messages about the importance of physical appearances tops it all off. This is one kids should skip.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Alex & Co. leans into traditional gender stereotypes. Point them out as you see them and ask your kids if they notice them too.
What do you think about Emma becoming popular after getting her braces off and buying a new wardrobe? What is the message being sent by that storyline?
Does Alex & Co. seem very realistic to you? Why or why not?
