What's the Story?

Thanks to the Prodigy Corporation, a sick tween gets a new chance at life as her mind is transplanted into a synthetic body in ALIEN: EARTH. Though a success, this new hybrid life form, known as Wendy (Sydney Chandler), is still haunted by thoughts of her medic brother, Joe (Alex Lawther), and she tracks his whereabouts. When the space ship Maginot crash-lands on Earth, violence and chaos ensue—not to mention that it was carrying "specimens," aka Xenomorphs, a ruthless and lethal breed of aliens. By now, Wendy has a handful of hybrid friends, and she volunteers to go into the wreckage with the hope of saving Joe. The head of Prodigy, trillionaire Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin), allows this with some trepidation. Will this hybrid crew be able to manage the Xenomorphs with their synthetic attributes? Or will the Xenomorph line continue its wake of destruction?

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Fans of the movie franchise might wonder if this series is a rehash, but they needn't fear; Hawley's vision simply and successfully uses a familiar framework to introduce new questions and problems. Alien: Earth opens with a group of working-class humans rowdily eating breakfast after awakening from cryosleep, mirroring the first scenes of 1979's classic Alien. But there's a lot to chew on here: The hybrids are an interesting conundrum; with the minds of tweens and the super-charged bodies of synthetics, they may be the key to defeating the Xenomorphs (and they're fun to watch, too).

Not everything is new in this world: This version still traffics in evil CEOs, money-hungry corporations, unsettling synthetics (Olyphant shines here), tension galore, and, of course, aliens that simply will not let up.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about humanity. What makes someone fully human? Do you think that Wendy is human, or does her synthetic body change that?

  • Do you think it's fair for companies like Weyland-Yutani and the Prodigy Corporation to "play God"? What would your thoughts be if those companies and their tech were real?

  • What do you think makes the aliens so scary in the Alien franchise? Is it their physical look, their behavior, or something else?
