Allen Iv3rson
What's the Story?
ALLEN IV3RSON is a three-part docuseries about former United States NBA basketball player Allen Iverson. The champion athlete, along with his mother Ann Iverson and other family members, share what it was like for him being brought up in a rough neighborhood in Hampton, Virginia surrounded by poverty, drugs, and violence. It discusses how his talent and ability to stay focused on his future career goals helped him become a top high school athlete in football and basketball. They also discuss some of the more difficult times in Iverson's youth, including a 1993 racism-fueled arrest and subsequent four month incarceration for assault. Also highlighted is Iverson's surprising decision to leave Georgetown University after two years and go pro in 1996, and how the league's marketing campaign, which portrayed him as ‘the answer' to filling the void created by Michael Jordan's retirement, helped make him a popular (and sometimes controversial) culture icon. The most impactful moments of his professional and personal life while in the NBA, along with some post-retirement troubles, are also topics of discussion. Archive footage of early interviews and game moments featuring Iverson, along with conversations with folks like NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, journalists, and Iverson's former coaches and associates help round it all out.
Is It Any Good?
This somewhat artistic and very candid autobiographical docuseries offers viewers lots of firsthand accounts about what it is like to grow from a childhood of poverty and violence into one of the most influential players in NBA history. Allen Iv3rson showcases some of Iverson's (a.k.a "The Answer") best moments on the court throughout high school, college, and his professional career, as well as some of the controversies that surrounded him. As each episode delves into the highs and lows of his life, Iverson and others address each topic with candor, and creates the sense that he is an imperfect but genuine and generous person. It's a story of success, but Allen Iv3rson also serves as a cautionary tale of about what happens when athletes are unable to come to terms with their decline in the their sport, or when they lack the necessary financial education to ensure that they are financially well-positioned once their athletic careers are over. Overall, it's a story that basketball fans will find compelling.
