What's the Story?
AMSTERDAM EMPIRE is a series about when Amsterdam‘s top cannabis tycoon files for divorce, and his (soon-to-be-ex) wife sets out to destroy him, the mistress he cheated with, and their family drug business, triggering a chain reaction that could tear their family apart. The season progresses with the ex and mistress emotionally torturing each other, a messy trial, and a series of events that seals the bonds of family in an unpredictable way.
Is It Any Good?
This Dutch production is an enjoyable watch, with Famke Janssen as a standout. Her portrayal of Betty—a beautiful, damaged, wealthy woman seeking revenge on her cheating husband—channels "Tanya from White Lotus" energy as she maintains stylish elegance even mid-meltdown. The Amsterdam Empire story moves at a satisfying clip, pairing quick and sometimes comical writing with strong performances. The violent scenes are filmed in a way that isn't overly gory or frightening, and the shots of Amsterdam are stunning (the underground house with underwater canal views is worth the wait!).
