What's the Story?

BADLY IN LOVE is a Japanese reality show where former juvenile delinquents move in together in hope of finding love. Five male and four female "yankiis" in their 20s and 30s who have troubled or criminal pasts move into a schoolhouse-type residence for two weeks. While there they hope to form bonds with each other, and with any luck find someone with whom they can become romantically involved. As they navigate their connections to one another during dates, challenges, and writing love notes to each other (which get dropped off in their "school" lockers), they also must figure out how to manage the anger, jealousy, and anything else that may trigger intense reactions. Throughout it all, actress MEGUMI, rapper AK-69, and comedian Nagano watch what's happening from a soundstage and share their thoughts about what's happening.

This voyeuristic Japanese social experiment is similar to Western dating t.v. shows, but attempts to raise the stakes by featuring a cast that carries lots of personal baggage. Participants appear to easily overcome any suggested rivalries between them (some of which seem staged for the cameras), and seem to bond over authentic conversations about their past troubles and future goals. During interviews they also discuss why and how they chose to turn their lives around. But outside of this, Badly in Love features all the flirtations and dates of a typical dating show. The remarks offered by the commentators, which are accompanied by a canned laugh track, are often humorous, which adds to the entertainment value. It's not particularly innovative, but if you like dating reality TV, chances are you'll find it entertaining.

  • Does the fact that the participants of Badly in Love have troubled, violent, or criminal pasts change the process by which they're looking to make connections on the show? If so, how?
