What's the story?

In BECOMING, a documentary series executive produced by LeBron James, star athletes and entertainers tell the stories of how they became who they are today. Season One includes profiles of WNBA star Candace Parker, actor Caleb McLaughlin, dancer Julianne Hough, and more. Each episode starts from the very beginning, accompanying the celebrity back to their hometown and talking to their family, teachers, and coaches. There's lots of behind-the-scenes archival footage and photos, and interviews with people who helped the star succeed. The athletes and celebs talk about the setbacks they overcame on their way to success, and share stories of how they achieved their dreams.

Is it any good?

Kids who are into sports, music, or acting will like learning about celebrities who did the impossible and rose to the top of their professions. The stories in Becoming are inspiring and show how the stars' tremendous amounts of perseverance and grit are the secrets to their success. The stars are pretty open and honest in their interviews, and so they also do a great job of showcasing the not-so-fun parts of being an elite athlete or entertainer. While the feel-good series is appropriate for young kids, many of the celebrities featured on the show aren't well known by young kids and will likely appeal more to their parents.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about all the hard work it takes to become successful, and the sacrifices that are sometimes made. Do you have any aspirations at this point in your life that have forced you to make hard decisions?

  • During their rise to success, these celebrities had to overcome a lot of obstacles. When is a time you had to show perseverance and keep going even when things got hard?

  • Do you feel especially drawn to any specific celebrity or athlete in Becoming? If so, what is it about their story or their talent that you find so compelling?
