Beetlejuice
What's the Story?
In BEETLEJUICE, the occult-loving characters from Beetlejuice return. Tween girl Lydia (Alyson Court) is into all things spooky and creepy, much to her stepmother Delia's chagrin. When Lydia whispers "Beetlejuice" three times, her bedroom turns into a portal to Neitherworld, home of the chaotic ghost Beetlejuice (Stephen Ouimette). Self-centered Beetlejuice doesn't understand Lydia's earthly concerns, but she finds him charming nonetheless. He's got child-like wonder and takes everything literally, like sitting on top of the monsters he's been hired to "babysit." Beetlejuice also has a deep passion for gross things; the slimier the better. The unlikely duo can explore the creatures and places of Neitherworld together, as long as Lydia returns to her boring human room before bedtime.
Is It Any Good?
The humor and subject matter in this animated series will be a home run with some tween kids, and an absolute turnoff to others. Everything about Beetlejuice is slightly off-kilter, from the gross creatures to Beetlejuice's man-child personality. The storylines are delightfully zany and nonsensical. Halloween-lovers, and fans of Tim Burton will love the celebration of all-things-spooky. Grown-ups might not appreciate Beetlejuice's rudeness, though he mostly learns his lesson in each episode. Adults may also find the ambiguously romantic relationship between Beetlejuice and Lydia inappropriate for the intended audience.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the Beetlejuice character. Is he funny? Creepy? Gross? Kind? Mean? Are viewers supposed to root for him or against him?
This series premiered in 1989. If it were made today, what do you think might be different about it? If you've seen the 2024 movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, how is this show different from the movie? How do you think culture has changed since then?
Lydia loves all things spooky and Halloween-y, which is not what her stepmother wants her to be interested in. Do you have any interests you think your parents don't totally understand?
