What's the Story?

BERLIN ER opens with Dr. Suzanna Parker (Haley Louise Jones) transferring to an emergency room in Berlin from a geriatrics ward in Munich. She's met with an overworked team led by drug-addicted but highly dedicated Dr. Ben Webber (Slavko Papadic), who treats patients by any means necessary. The doctors cope with their work stress by shutting down emotionally, abusing drugs, engaging in unprotected sex, and other risky behaviors. From the patients to the doctors and nurses and other staff, each character comes with their own swirling tornado of stress. How will they cope and serve their patients?

This pretty stressful watch features a variety of high-stress scenarios, even down to a dream sequence where one doctor pulls her own teeth out. There are strategic scenes in Berlin ER where camera and lighting effects are designed to make you feel like you're experiencing a drug trip. The core staff of doctors and nurses band together to help as many patients as they can, but the pace of each episode makes one wonder how long the series and its characters can sustain before they burn out or OD.

  • The doctors in Berlin ER do everything from scream into their clothing in private to abusing substances in order to cope with stressful situations. What are some healthy coping mechanisms that you use when life gets stressful?
