Betty La Fea: The Story Continues
What's the Story?
BETTY LA FEA: THE STORY CONTINUES, the second sequel of the original Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea (1999-2001), and the inspiration for Ugly Betty (2006-2010), features the sweet, clumsy, and now more-glamorous Beatriz Aurora Pinzón Solano, aka Betty (Ana María Orozco), 25 years after the original series began. Betty is separated from her former boss-turned-husband Armando (Jorge Enrique Abello) and is no longer the president of Ecomoda. But when she shows up at her father-in-law's funeral, Armando wastes no time letting her know that he desperately wants her back. Betty doesn't want a reconciliation, but soon she learns that the late Roberto Mendoza (Kepa Amuchastegui) has gifted the company's shares equally between her, Armando, and their adult daughter Camila, aka Mila (Juanita Molina), who has just arrived from studying fashion in New York and is anxious to prove herself. The catch? Betty must agree to be the president of the company again so that they can have the shares. As Ecomoda's current president, Armando knows that the company is in financial jeopardy, especially after the COVID pandemic, and is hoping that she'll take over. But all Betty wants to do is legally divorce him and work on improving her relationship with Mila, who seems to be holding a grudge against her. Meanwhile, Marcela Valencia (Natalia Ramírez), Betty's longtime nemesis, is putting a plan in motion so that she can eventually take over their family business. There's a lot of drama, and Betty knows that the only way she can deal with it all is to be true to herself, even if it means going back to her former looks.
Is It Any Good?
The fun Colombian telenovela sequel offers fans of the original Betty la fea series a chance to revisit Betty and Armando as they navigate the challenges and celebrate the triumphs in their professional and personal lives. Betty la Fea: The Story Continues also brings back many other colorful characters, like Ecomoda's designer Hugo Lombardi (Julián Arango), staff supervisor Patricia (Lorna Cepeda), and receptionists Bertha Muñoz de González (Luces Velásquez) and Sandra Patiño (Marcela Posada), who form part of a group of employees that Lombardi refers to as the Cuartel de las Feas (The Ugly Cartel). Flashbacks are used to show viewers what life was like for Betty and her family for more than two decades, but the series is mostly focused on the present, and relies on the new, younger characters like Mila (Juanita Molina) and Ignacio Ortiz (Sebastián Osorio) to underscore how things have changed since Betty was a young assistant.
The sequel also turns the table on misogyny and points out LGBTQ+ stereotypes that were considered socially acceptable in the late 1990s. Throughout it all, Betty remains a strong and intelligent lead character who's unapologetic about who she is, her self worth, and what makes her wonderfully different and unique regardless of other people's beauty standards. Granted, all of this is contextualized in soapy plot lines and slapstick humor, some of which lands better in Spanish than in the dubbed versions. Nonetheless, Betty la Fea: The Story Continues successfully pays homage to its globally popular parent series, and does so while keeping the story focused on a present-day female role model who understands that true beauty comes from within.
