What's the Story?

BLACK CLOVER follows the story of Asta (voiced in English by Dallas Reid), an orphaned boy who dreams of becoming the legendary Wizard King, the most powerful mage in the entire kingdom. Unfortunately Asta was born without the ability to use magic and he lives in a world where everyone can use magic. Through a series of events, Asta comes into possession of a rare grimoire, a powerful book that allows users to use magical abilities. Asta's grimoire also has the unique ability to use anti-magic; with this newfound power of anti-magic Asta pursues his goal of becoming the Wizard King.

This Shounen anime sticks to the well-established themes and tropes of its genre, almost predictability so, but that doesn't make it bad. If you've seen Naruto, One Piece, or Fairy Tail, in a way you've already watched Black Clover, but there's something special about the pure simplicity of Black Clover's execution. It's a series that isn't afraid to reuse established elements that older and bigger series have covered numerous times. It knows its audience and doesn't waste time holding your hand through extensive exposition and world building. It moves fast to get you right into the action and there are a lot of fight scenes with fun animation.

The characters feel balanced, and their power grows appropriately with the story. There aren't really overpowered hero characters; most of the time the heroes must team up to bring down the villains. The main cast of heroes and villains is entertaining and well written for being standard Shounen characters. Black Clover is a guilty pleasure, a by-the-books entry to the Shounen genre that recaptures the magic of earlier series by perfectly recycling them in its own way. A great jumping-in point for the genre for anime newcomers.
