What's the Story?

BLOOD FREE is a suspenseful K-drama focused on a biotechnology firm that has cornered the market on manufacturing lab-grown meat, which promises to expand to replicating grains and palm oil next. Some folks aren't happy about this, given that the company's ever-expanding influence -- supposedly motivated by the desire to save the planet instead of corporate greed -- means that entire industries (cattle farming, fishing) are being wiped out. When the CEO has a bounty put on her head and the firm's computer system is held ransom by hackers, the pressure's on to figure out which members of her inner circle can be trusted, and who might be working against her.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Kids say : Not yet rated

The series is a slow, suspenseful burn -- maybe a bit too slow at times -- but the performances are strong and the whole thing looks very polished. Blood Free isn't the first show to examine advancing technology and its possible ramifications on our world, nor is it the best of that bunch, but the fake meat focus is an interesting and offbeat spin on the theme. If you can hang with the languid pace and the stylized music and editing, it's not a bad choice for a weekend binge.
