A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Blown Away is a competition show where professional glass blowers create unique art pieces in each episode. The show is a fun introduction to the art of blown glass, because it takes the time to discuss the tools and craft used in its creation. The contestants range from people who are well-known and at the top of their field to young up-and-coming artists. Challenges include creating something practical, like a serving dish or decanter, or creating something purely artistic, like a piece inspired by a photograph. The pieces get judged at the end, but the series mostly focuses on the glass blowing process, the creative choices that the contestants make, and the adjustments that happen when mistakes are made. There's a lot of broken glass! Mild profanity is occasionally used and includes "damn," "hell," etc.

What's the Story?
BLOWN AWAY is a competition show in which 10 artists compete by creating pieces of blown glass. Each episode brings a new challenge, from creating serving dishes and drinking glasses to creating art pieces inspired by technology or old photographs. The show follows the competitors' process, beginning with their inspiration and design, on through blowing and crafting their pieces. When mistakes happen, they often involve broken glass, and the artists must adapt and improvise or be eliminated.
Is It Any Good?
Working with glass is a craft that doesn't often get a lot of shine, despite being so exciting and visual. Glass blowers wrangle fire and are in constant danger of having their work shatter. Blown Away smartly focuses on the skill of glass blowing, focusing on the artists' process from beginning to end and the way they overcome mistakes along the way. The show moves fast but also manages to take the time to explain elements of the process to viewers who may be new to it. The one drawback is that it's sometimes difficult to appreciate the finished pieces on the screen, because they're often meant to be touched, experienced, or seen from all sides.
