Blue Ribbon Baking Championship
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In the BLUE RIBBON BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP, contestants are asked to make desserts that are inspired by the state fairs found across the U.S. Bakers create pies, cakes, and other goodies in the tradition of these fairs, leaning on the recipes that have been handed down to them as well as the innovations they've drummed up. Hosts Sandra Lee and Jason Biggs bring in judges to decide who will win the coveted blue ribbon for each competition, and who will ultimately win the $100,000 prize.
Is It Any Good?
As a folksy and colorful baking competition that runs with the small-town tradition of baking for state fairs, this competition sticks to a formula. Though the production flows smoothly and the hosts and judges are showbiz ready, there's not the intimacy or skill in Blue Ribbon Baking Championship that its inspiration, The Great British Baking Show, touts.
Families who bake together can enjoy this show, but be aware that one of the hosts starred in a sexually raunchy movie series about dirty things done to pies. Was that intentional casting? Co-host Jason Biggs exudes circus-tent charm in his candy-colored suits, and mostly shrugs off references to the smutty hit movies, but for those in the know, it can be an elephant in the room. For those who don't know -- or don't care -- this show can pass as a standard baking competition.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about perseverance in Blue Ribbon Baking Championship. What do the bakers do when everything goes wrong with their challenge? How do you persevere when things get tough?
Humility helps the bakers learn from judges who know more about the craft than they do. When have you practiced humility? What is the difference between humility and humiliation?
Contestants in this show use baking as a form of creative expression. How do your communicate your creative vision?
