What's the Story?
BOILING POINT is a six-part series about some of the most significant moments in American history that are crucial to the understanding of Black America's fight against systemic racism. From school segregation and voter suppression, to police brutality in the U.S. and mass incarceration, it documents just some of many the injustices experienced by Black citizens, and the larger, social and political reactions to them. It features archival footage of key events, and the subsequent reactions to them, by both Black and non-Black citizens, law enforcement, and government. Contemporary interviews with scholars, activists, and writers like Dr. Melina Abdullah, Jody Armour, Esq., Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, and law enforcement officials like Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón offer insights into how these moments have served as calls for racial equity.
Is It Any Good?
This thought-provoking series examines prominent moments in history that underscore the systemic racism that exists and persists in the United States. It discusses events like the first planned march on Selma, the events leading up to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, and what happened during and after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It also looks at the historic reactions to the existence of racism in education, the criminal justice system, and in every day practice. Throughout it all, it parallels these moments in history with more contemporary events, including Black Lives Matter, and discusses the changing role of media and technology is playing in them.
These moments in Black and African-American history raised awareness about racism among non-Black people in America. But Boiling Point also points to the fact that they did not lead to the the systemic changes necessary to ensure racial equity. It also notes that the challenges Black and African-American communities face today are ultimately the same ones they've faced throughout history. While experts note some progress in how the conversations about racism are being had, the overall series offers clear evidence of the country's historic failure to heed the repeated call for racial justice, and to take real action to achieve it.
