Breaking Bear
What's the Story?
BREAKING BEAR begins with three bear siblings—Jer (voiced by Brendan Fraser), Alistair (Josh Gad), and Blair (Sarah Michelle Gellar)—waking up from hibernation in a forest that's changing. Kicked out of their home and attempting to rebuild their lives, they turn to the dark business of the drug trade.
Is It Any Good?
Desperation is the bane of comedy; it's also the only type of comedy that this show knows. Breaking Bear is just an endless barrage of over-the-top shock "humor" trying to appeal to an imaginary audience that laughs at even the slightest mention of sexual anatomy or bodily functions. It absolutely squanders the talents of the poor actors who signed on for it, including Gellar and Oscar-winner Fraser, who would have had funnier material to work with if the producers had simply asked them to make fart noises into the microphone.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the bears. Who are they? What is the family dynamic? What changes in their lives that pushes them to become drug dealers?
How do the bears' lives compare to people's everyday lives in this era? Does the show illuminate any societal problems that humans might also be dealing with?
Why do you think the creators are choosing to tell this story? What do you think they are hoping audiences will get from it?
