Can This Love Be Translated?
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
CAN THIS LOVE BE TRANSLATED is a Korean romantic comedy about the relationship between a popular actress and a multilingual interpreter. Joo Ho-jin (Kim Seon-ho), a talented and precise translator fluent in four languages, is in Japan for an interpreting job. Meanwhile, an unknown actress named Cha Mu-hee (Go Youn-jung) is in Japan trying to locate a long-distance boyfriend. After an awkward meeting in a noodle restaurant they hit it off and spend an afternoon together, only to have it end abruptly. It's a year later when Mu-hee, now a sudden global sensation thanks to her breakout role as a killer zombie in the (fictitious) movie The Quiet Woman, runs into Ho-jin again. This time, however, he's been hired to interpret for her during a major interview, and subsequently to help facilitate communication between her and Japanese actor Hiro Kurosawa (Sota Fukushi) during the shooting of (the fictitious) unscripted reality TV series Romantic Trip. Throughout the experience they are friendly, but Mu-hee finds Ho-jin to be emotionless and inflexible. Meanwhile, he's developing feelings for her that he can't quite understand.
Is It Any Good?
Both emotional and humorous, this K-drama offers a romance story that takes place across several continents. Most of Can This Love Be Translated? is told as a flashback, which creates some confusing moments, especially at the beginning. Nonetheless, you can't help but chuckle at some of the quirky reactions and one-liners. While the show can be predictable, it also manages to offer some original, albeit delusional plot lines relating to Cha Mu-hee's Do Ra-mi persona and other cast members' interesting character backstories. Fans of K-dramas will find Can This Love Be Translated? imperfect but entertaining.
