Charlotte's Web
What's the Story?
In CHARLOTTE'S WEB, a young girl named Fern (voiced by Natalie Chan) saves a piglet from being killed and takes him as her own. She names him Wilbur (Elijah Wood) and teaches him everything from manners to life lessons, while the two create their own special language. After an incident at home, Wilbur must move to a barn where he meets other animals, including a spider named Charlotte (Amy Adams). When the animals learn that Wilbur is destined to become Christmas dinner Charlotte comes up with a plan to save her friend. Crafting messages in her webs, she convinces the town that Wilbur is something of a miracle. It turns out, the real miracle is their friendship.
Is It Any Good?
This mini-series is possibly the definitive adaptation of this timeless classic, gracefully honoring the original book while keeping modern sensibilities in mind. The three episodes of Charlotte's Web—which captures the spirit of the original while modernizing the narrative with multi-layered characters—are a treat for those looking for wholesome content for the whole family.
While some themes and nuances may require parental guidance, this miniseries is bound to spark important conversations about friendship, caring for animals, accepting loss, and cherishing life. Though the show's tone is positive, some scenes involving separation, loss, and death may be upsetting or sad for some kids. Ultimately, though, the positive role models and examples of empathy and loyalty are the biggest takeaways from this whole-family treat.
