Coming from America
What's the Story?
COMING FROM AMERICA is a docuseries following multiple families as they participate in the Blaxit movement, in which Black Americans are leaving the United States to settle in Africa in search of a better life. The series highlights the journeys of several families, including single mother Julia Jovone-Davis and her children moving to Ghana; Elaine and Gabe Smiley's interracial family relocating to Zambia; and the Kellys' large mixed family moving to Ghana, where they plan to start a comedy club.
Is It Any Good?
This docuseries offers a unique and compelling look at a little-known but important movement among the Black American community. Coming from America shows the complexities of uprooting one's family and moving from America to Africa for the chance at a better life, and the personal and emotional challenges that come with it. The show balances humor with deep social and cultural issues, including what it's like to go from living as a minority to living as the majority. It also covers everything from leaving behind aging parents to navigating foreign foods and bugs. It's an insightful and heartwarming series that fosters understanding and reflection.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about identity and belonging. How do you think you'd feel moving to a new country, especially one that feels culturally connected but still foreign? How do the characters' perceptions of themselves and their heritage evolve as they adjust to their new homes? How does the concept of home change when they relocate to a different continent?
Explore the challenges and benefits of living in a new country with a different cultural backdrop. How do the characters' experiences of race differ in Africa compared to the United States? What tensions arise within the families, especially those in interracial relationships, and how are those challenges dealt with? What does the show reveal about how cultural heritage influences the way people live their lives?
Reflect on what it means to pursue happiness and fulfillment. How do the families define what a "better life" means for them, and how does it differ from their life in the United States? What does the show teach viewers about the role of material wealth, community, and peace of mind in achieving happiness?
The show highlights the significant sacrifices these families make to move abroad, leaving behind loved ones and familiar comforts for a life full of uncertainties. Families can discuss the courage it takes to make these big life changes. What would it feel like to leave everything familiar behind? How do these sacrifices reflect their desire for a better future, and what challenges do they face in adapting to their new environments?
