What's the Story?
CRIME SCENE ZERO, a reboot of the popular South Korean TV franchise Crime Scene, features celebrities playing characters and improvising their way through (fictitious) murder mystery games. Each role-playing game, which lasts two episodes, begins with the discovery of a deceased person who appears to have died as a result of foul play. Then franchise veterans, including comedians Jang Jin and Jang Dong-min, actor Kim Ji-hoon, An Yu-jin, a member of the K-pop band IVE, and host Park Ji-yoon play the roles of detectives, suspects, witnesses, and the murderer. This show welcome newcomers like Kang Min-hee, a member of the K-Pop band Cravity, actors Joo Hyun-young and Park Sung-woong, and model Hwang In-youp. After gathering together to discuss the few details they have about what happened, each participant is given 15 minutes and a Polaroid camera to collect evidence throughout studio sets designed to look like the murder scene and various other locations associated with each character. When time is up they present their findings, and then each must vote for who they think is the murderer. The character who gets the most votes is put behind bars. The catch? If the one behind bars is the real killer, the cast members who voted for them gets their share of a 10 millionwon prize. But if the wrong person is locked up, the cast member playing the real killer gets to keep it all.
Is It Any Good?
The fifth installment in the Crime Scene franchise, which is the first one released globally, offers entertaining game show experiences that combine improvised sleuthing, arguing, and humor. In this "whodunnit" series, viewers are permitted to follow each character as they look for clues, talks to themselves, and bickers with others during the 15 minutes of evidence gathering, which is stretched to roughly an hour of viewing time over two episodes. Characters also privately reveal their thinking process and suspicions during interviews. Some of their backgrounds and personalities also make for some interesting moments. But while the plot thickens with every twist and turn, there are so many discoveries that it can become hard to keep track of all the details. Some of the group conversations and evidence reveals do drag on at times. Nonetheless, Crime Scene Zero offers a unique entertainment experience that's worth checking out.
