What's the Story?
CRUTCH is a spinoff of The Neighborhood that centers around the Crutchfield family, especially Frank (Tracy Morgan), a widower with the opposite of empty nest syndrome. Frank enjoys his newfound financial freedom until his adult children (Jermaine Fowler and Adrianna Mitchell) tell him they're moving back home with two grandchildren in tow. All of a sudden, his Harlem household is full again.
Is It Any Good?
Tracy Morgan has a wholly unique presence that makes him easy to root for, and this spinoff of The Neighborhood is counting on that. Crutch feels like a throwback: it's filmed in front of a live audience, focuses on an extended family living in the same house, and even leans into some classic sitcom cliches (precocious kids, guest stars from other shows, vague but constant positivity). Nothing outside of Morgan feels especially original, or even interesting. Nevertheless, Morgan's humor can still carry a show by itself, and there's something refreshing about a series so dedicated to kindness (even as bland as it is here).
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about families. What is the Crutch family dynamic? What makes them unique? What are some of the interesting one-on-one relationships within the family?
What motivates Frank? How does he relate to his children and grandchildren? How does he weigh his personal wants against the needs of his children?
What role does Frank's wife play in the series? How does her presence affect the way the family members relate to one another?
