This is a good example of recent series that are having some fun with typical heist story structure (putting the crew together, the plan, the prep, the job, and the getaway). Culprits successfully combines the heist structure with action set pieces and a murder mystery. There are times when the series falls into cliche, but it's mostly dedicated to breaking with tradition. That extends to the casting, which puts women and actors of color in non-stereotypical roles. Contemporary crime series tend to feel stretched out from a movie-length story into an eight-hour series, but Culprits earns its runtime with dense plotting, fun action sequences, and an intricate mystery. Its thieves are easy to root for.
