What's the Story?

DAEMONS OF THE SHADOW REALM follows the fate-touched twins, Yuru (voiced by Ben Stegmair) and Asa (voiced by Molly Zhang). Raised in the mountains, Yuru is an accomplished hunter who loves his sister and community. But when "dragons" attack, his world is turned upside down and the dark truth of Higashi Village—and his own family—is revealed.

This action-packed anime drama stands out for its careful, loving exploration of Japanese mythology alongside a gripping plot. Daemons of the Shadow Realm has all the exciting fights scenes and tense mystery you'd want in a mature shonen series. But it also has interesting characters with complex personalities facing nuanced problems. It's a bit of a slow build towards meaningful themes, but there's plenty for families to talk about.

This kind of anime is great for fans of sibling shonen stories like Demon Slayer and Delicious in Dungeon, as well as fans of Arakawa's previous masterpiece, Fullmetal Alchemist (as adapted in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood).

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about grief and trauma. How is Yuru coping with the major changes in his life? How does he handle his emotions? Is he making healthy choices?

  • Discuss the violence in the show. How does it compare to other shonen? Does the show teach any lessons about violence? How does violence affect characters? How does watching it affect you?

  • Which characters, if any, do you consider role models? Why?
